Catholic Bishops of PA Issue Flu Season Directives
Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania encourage the clergy and faithful to observe the necessary standard precautions to protect the health of others during this flu season, and especially with the risks related to H1N1 influenza (swine flu). The Bishops additionally direct the following for the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy and for flu prevention:
- The distribution of the Precious Blood for the faithful is generally suspended.
- The exchange of the sign of peace is to be offered without any physical contact. If the priest celebrant chooses to extend the invitation for the sign of peace, the faithful, instead of a handshake, may bow to the persons nearby.
In addition, the faithful may consider receiving the Precious Body on their hands to avoid the spread of the flu from one mouth to another.
These directives issued by Catholic Bishops of Pennsylvania are effective Sunday, October, 18, 2009 until determined otherwise by the local Bishop.
Cardinal Justin F. Rigali, Archbishop of the Diocese of Philadelphia has
been named by the Holy Father to be the Apostolic Administrator for the
Diocese of Scranton, upon the acceptance of Bishop Joseph Martino’s resignation
by the Vatican. Cardinal Rigali will serve until a new bishop is installed.
Monsignor Joseph Bambera (former Pastor of St. John Bosco) has been asked
to be to be his local delegate and oversee the day-to-day operations of
the diocese. We pray for them in their new assignments.
Prayer
Intention Book: As some of you may have noticed, there is a NEW
Liturgical prayer intention book in the back of the churches. These books
are in accordance with the Liturgical year and have space for intentions
every day of the week. We encourage you to “briefly” indicate your intention
on the lines provided for that specific day. All intentions will be included
in the petitions for that day.
Masses which begin are to he completed if at all possible. If a parishioner takes ill during a Mass, we simply cannot dismiss the congregation. While certainly the ill person must be ministered to, the Mass must be prudently continued; also if the priest celebrating the Mass takes ill, the Mass is to be completed by another priest if at all possible. Please keep this in mind if any instances of illness occur during the celebration of the liturgy.
